Statue of Alexander the Great - Marble
Hellenistic period, mid-third century BC
Heigh 190 cm - 75" inches
Found: In 709

This statue was hewn from white marble of' very fine quality. Its head is sculpted from a separate block. The existence of' a row of indentations around the head indicates that it was once crowned with a metal laurel wreath.
The statue shows a figure of Alexander the Great standing frontally and with his weight on his right leg. His other leg is slightly apart. advanced forward and bent at the knee and toes probably barely touching the ground. The projection of the right hip slightly to the right gives his naked torso a gracious natural movement in the opposite direction. His mantle covers a part of his left shoulder and his back completely and goes around the lower part of the body. His hair is rendered in curled locks. The head is imperceptibly turned towards the left shoulder. On this side a lock of hair is shown fallen on the neck. The forehead is richly modelled with looks shadowed by prominent eyebrows and directed towards distance. The slightly open lips give his Face a dreamy and inspired expression. His right arm which must have been raised probably held a bronze spear. His other hand clasps the hilt of a sword whose sheath is hidden by his forearm Except for this accessory he could easily be taken fot a of Apollo.
What distinguishes this form similar statues of Alexander exhibited in various museums of the world is that it was discovered accompanied by an inscription which read Menas of Pergamon, son of Aias ,made [it] thus indicating its origin. The rendering of the upper part of the torso naked, the disposition of the body, and the meditative expression with slightly open lips are characteristic of portrayals of gods, especially Apollo, in the Hellenistic era. and of the School of Pergamum.
