Athena was a radiant goddess combining a love of wisdom with that of the arts:
handcrafts, agriculture and manual arts. She was the protector of Athens, her special city. Her temple was the Parthenon.
According to Hesiod, when Metis "the goddess that knows more than any god or mortal man." was pregnant by Zeus, he swallowed her out of fear she would bear a son more powerful than himself, perhaps able to depose him. Zeus then asked Hephaestus to crack open his skull with an axe. Athena emerged from his head full grown and dressed in armor, shouting a war cry heard over heavens and earth. She was born equal to her father in strength and wisdom. Athena was his favorite child, trusted to carry his favorite weapon, the thunderbolt.
Athena was called, Parthenos, the maiden or virgin. As a virgin goddess, she had no fear of men. She lived as one of them and always took their side. According te Aeschylus, her feelings leaned toward men, but not toward marriage. She defended Agamemnon against Clytemnestra. Her proteges were Odysseus, Heracles Diomedes, Achilles and Menelaus, all mortal men.
The olive created by her was her sacred tree, the owl, snake and cock her sacred animals. The festival of Panathenia, played a very important role in ancient times in her honor, plays a very important role in antique times, as a religious, cultural and artistic festival in her honor. The famous Parthenos" in Athens was created by the great sculptor, Phidias in the 5th century B.C.
The statue of Athena was found in 1982, during excavations of the South Bath ol Perge from the pool of section 1-8. The statue is intact except for her missing hands and shield. It was placed on a pillar of the west wall, of the room as part of a pillar. The goddess is represented in this statue as a young woman wearing a himation over her chiton. The weight of the body is supported on the left leg. The right leg is bent at the knee and extended to the side and back. The armor over her chest is decorated with a fish scale pattern. Over her breasts a head of Medusa. She wears thick leather sandals. On her head is a Corinthian helmet. Her face is framed by hair parted in the middle. She is looking upward with a sad but benevolent and determined facial expression. The pedestal on the base at her left probably supported a shield held by the goddess. The original statue of this type goes back to the fourth century B.C. This Roman copy belongs to the last half ol the second century A.D. (Antonine period)
